Elzevir Marsh

Completed April 2025
OCA is thrilled to announce our second project, Elzevir Marsh! Nestled within a network of conservation lands, this amazing property plays a crucial role in protecting a key ecological corridor. It’s a haven for Elk and several other species at risk, and it boasts vital headwaters that provide clean drinking water for hundreds of thousands of residents. We’re excited to team up with Quinte Conservation, who will be the incredible stewards of this property, adding it to their extensive network of protected lands in the area.

The amazing Elzevir Marsh property lies in between two large holdings owned by Quinte Conservation, within a network of other conservation lands, thereby contributing to the protection of a key ecological corridor. This 40-hectare (100 acre) parcel contains a portion of a very large marsh, which is bisected by the main channel of Elzevir Creek. This creek is a tributary of the Moira River which flows into an area of Lake Ontario that provides clean drinking water for hundreds of thousands of residents. This work will ensure these important headwaters remain in natural cover to ensure water quality for the long term.

This area was the specific release site for a  reintroduced Elk herd. The granite barrens found on the upland portion of this site are habitat for several species at risk including Eastern Whip-poor-will, Common Nighthawk, Five-lined Skink, and Prairie Warbler—all of which have been recorded on nearby conservation properties.

OCA is excited to work with our partner Quinte Conservation on the plan for the long-term stewardship and management of these lands in coordination with the network of lands Quinte has already successfully protected in this immediate area.
